■What is Hasami ware?

Hasami ware is produced in Hasami Town, Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture.

Although it is famous as a production center for porcelain, the pottery that was initially fired in Hasami Town around 1580 was earthenware.

Pottery is primarily made from clay, while porcelain is primarily made from stone. Currently, it is difficult to use materials from only one region, so we use clay and stone from Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Modern Arita ware also uses the same raw materials, and the main difference between Arita ware and Hasami ware, both produced in Kyushu and often compared, lies in whether or not they use clay or stone that is ranked according to the criterion of how easily the overglaze colors come out vividly.

It's not a matter of whether the vessels are of good or bad quality, but rather differences in their intended use and expression.

Hasami ware is produced in a medium-volume, medium-volume style, with each craftsman working in a division of labor and emphasizing handcrafted work, with production and manufacturing carried out by the entire region.
